Roomies <3

Walking home from a coffee date with my roommate from uni (shoutout to her – we still call each other “roomie” even though it’s been many years since we lived together and were always late for class, and she probably won’t read this, because she’s not a very big social media person but very present in real life, which I find very cool, but anyway!) – I walked past two girls having a very friendly and mild-mannered argument.

They could have been a couple, but the argument almost sounded too friendly to be a partner argument – for instance, I didn’t hear the sentence “you always [something something]” 😀

The fun thing is that it took me a while to figure out what they were talking about. Walking by, I heard one of them say:

“If one of them has to die, it should be that one…”

(I didn’t eavesdrop on purpose, you guys! Really! I was walking normally minding my own business. Anyway!)

I then figured out from the next words that I caught in passing that they were talking about plants, both rooting (hehehehehe!) for a specific plant to stay in the apartment.

Also, I didn’t really look at them, because I’m not THAT creepy, so I made up their looks in the doodle.

The berry thief

I went to see my parents this weekend, and they have the most amazing, giant garden full of colourful flowers and plants, fruit trees, berry bushes and butterflies.

Earlier in summer they had rhubarb, gooseberries, red currants and black currants, and now the plums, raspberries and blackberries are ready to eat, while the grapes and apples are ripening.

However, you have to be quick, because sometimes a brown and fluffy beast with a sweet tooth got there first!

*Update: I noticed my comics can be a bit hard to read, at least on my screen, so I’ve uploaded the individual images here as well:

Don’t look directly into the eyes of the berry thief, or he will make you feed him.

He fears nothing, not even the prickly branches of gooseberry bushes!

Squash, beet, squash, beet, squash

Hey guys, I put a new veggie pattern in my Redbubble shop – it’s less doodly than what I usually make:

See available products with this pattern

I made the design in Illustrator while sketching things out for a Danish food themed design competition (which I didn’t win, but the people liked my design and gave me free tickets for their event, so that was cool!).

Only the beet (in a different version) ended up in my final illustration, but I really like this pattern.

If you also think it’s cool, you can get it via the link on:

  • mugs, coasters, tote bags, water bottles and stickers (white background)
  • travel mugs and spiral notebooks (blue background).

Old drawings ❤

Now that I look at it, the design also reminds me of a squash comic that I made in the early days of this blog (over 4 years ago!):

Posh Squash by Wordsanddoodles (May 22, 2015)

It’s really weird! I think I thought it was hilarious then. I still like the style of the drawing and the expressions on the characters’ faces.

And maybe it somehow inspired me to draw the butternut squash again in a new version.

I guess I could make the old doodle a product design too (without the speech bubbles, maybe) – what do you think?

Doodle shop!

Hello guys, I’m excited to share that I’ve started a small shop on the site Redbubble. So far, I’ve uploaded 7 designs, including my Happy Dragon and my morning doodles – but I’m planning to make lots more.

Some of my product designs 🙂

You can check out my shop here, and see the stickers, mugs, tote bags and other products I chose to put my doodles on:

I’d be so happy if you would favorite the ones you like, or even buy something if you feel like it. Like it says in my Redbubble bio, it would be so fun to see some of my doodles travel the world.

If you do buy anything and take a photo, please tag me on Instagram with @wordsanddoodlesblog or #wordsanddoodles. I’d love to see where they go!

Also – let me know if there are any of the doodles here on the blog that you would like to see as a product in the Redbubble shop 🙂

Going bananas

Wow, I just realised I haven’t posted any doodles here for almost a month. Here’s a 5-minute drawing of a banana to make up for it:

I listened to one of my favourite podcasts yesterday while cooking dinner: BBC Radio Four – The Food Programme. I listened to this episode about bananas that I highly recommend.

I learned that there are lots and lots of varieties of bananas in the world, but we often only see one variety in super markets, at least in the countries where bananas don’t grow naturally. And there was a whole story about how that one type of banana became the super banana that now dominates the market. But apparently some bananas are purple and some taste like icecream! The most common type of banana is in danger of extinction because of – I think – a type of fungus that attacks it and has spread to some parts of the world. I’m doing a bad job of summing up the podcast, so yeah, maybe just listen to it 🙂

I don’t actually eat bananas that often, mainly because I try to eat locally grown fruits and veggies as much as possible, because it’s often better for the environment. Also, my boyfriend REALLY hates bananas (and has since childhood) so he’s happier when we don’t have them in the apartment. I have foods that I’m disgusted by too, so no shade thrown, and since I can live without bananas, I don’t mind. However, I have a really good recipe for banana bread that I kind of crave now after drawing and writing about bananas so much.

When I think of bananas in a dessert context I always also think of a specific banana shaped pastry that I often got at the bakery when I went with my sister as a kid. It was some kind of sponge cake at the bottom with (maybe) swiss buttercream on top covered with yellow marcipan and with dark chocolate details at the ends. I can’t remember if it actually had a banana taste to it, though. But I loved it so much – I think I mainly liked cakes with fun shapes as a kid, and didn’t really care a lot about taste.

Here’s a speed video of the 5-minute banana drawing:

The Weird Sisters

Happy birthday to my buddy since really long scarves and colourful tracksuits were in fashion (and before) ❤

I based the doodle on a fantastic photo of my sister and me that I found this week while sorting through some piles of old drawings, postcards and photos.

I had to call this post the Weird Sisters (if you’ve followed the blog for a bit, you know I listen to Harry Potter on audiobook over and over again). But you can probably tell from the photo who’s the weird one 😀

The photo makes me ask myself two questions:

Why did I dress like I was in a band in the 90s?

Why did I ever stop dressing like that?

Anyway, I got distracted by fashion thoughts, did I mention that my sister is awesome and that it’s her birthday?

LOL

Bug time

Last week I went for a walk outside in the sunny but cold Spring weather with my nephew, and we met this little friend who probably just woke up from Winter sleep:

S’up ladybug?

It turned out my nephew (who’s 8) knew a lot more than me about these creatures, and he told me that it’s called the 7-spot ladybird. Also that people think the dots tell the age, but they don’t. All the ladybugs of this kind have 7 dots.

We agreed that this bug probably thought that it had climbed a real mountain, because it was sitting on a rock that seemed big compared to a ladybug.

I mainly know the English word for this little bug as “ladybug”, but have also heard “ladybird”. Some quick doodling tells me that “ladybug” is the American English version, and the British normally call it “ladybird”. In Danish it’s called “mariehøne” which literally translated to English means Mary/Marie hen, so apparently the Danes agree that the bug is a kind of bird…

Happy dragon

This happy dragon wants everyone to have a good Monday:

Dragons are on my  mind, because I’m currently re-re-re-listening to the audiobook version of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (no spoilers). Ok, tiny spoiler: There are dragons in it.

This dragon is friendly and vegetarian, though, looks kinda like a dinosaur mixed with a dog and breathes fire after eating chilies.

You’re welcome to download the image and use it as a wallpaper for some happy dragon energy this week.

I’ve just set it as my own wallpaper and it’s already giving me some good vibes and confidence to set off another week of job hunting.

Drawing process:

My drawing style is usually defined by a black line, but today I wanted to try something different. I quite like the look of this image without the black lines. It gives a very different look, almost like paper cutouts. I drew everything in Adobe Illustrator (with my Wacom tablet) this time, not based on a sketch on paper, like I sometimes do.
