Here’s a doodle of some more Christmas presents I made for my family from thrifted fabrics.

Thrifted fabric things

The first thing is a gift bag. I made it out of a green piece of fabric from the thrift shop. It might have been a napkin or something.

Sewing is fun!

The bonus of using used fabric is that it’s already hemmed! And hemming is like the least exciting bit about sewing, I think. Strongly in competition with measuring and cutting.

Ok yes I only really like going really fast on the sewing machine! Which is a small part of the process, but anyway!

For the gift bag I just sewed it into a simple bag and tied it with a red ribbon – for optimal Christmas vibes.

It’s a scrunchie

Turns out I had a harder time drawing a scrunchie than I did actually sewing it…

The doodle is a bit off, but IRL it’s a black/dark blue shiny fabric with tiny gold stars. Originally a shirt from the thrift shop.

All I had to do was to cut and sew it into a cylinder. *Hot tip: use a longer piece of fabric than you might think so the scrunchie can stretch out when you add the elastic. I might have made this mistake for my first try. I probably could have looked up a sewing tutorial before starting but I didn’t have the patience.

I put a piece of elastic band in the proper lenght in the fabric tube, sewed the hole and it was ready for my nieces incredibly thick and beautiful hair!

From scarf to cozy

The third thing in the drawing is a burgundy scarf that I machine-washed which made it into a thick felt. Not really om purpose, but it turned out great.

I cut and sewed it into two tea glass cozies for my mum. I looked for some inspo on Pinterest but I couldn’t really find anything, so I ended up with my own design. They have coloured felt balls as “buttons” and a tiny strap. I made this so it’s possible to adjust the size og the cozy later if it gets floppy and doesn’t sit snugly on the glass.

… extra nice to shop elves!

While Christmas shopping I’ve seen lots of other nice and patient customers. But also some very… impatient* ones!

I met one shop assistant with a massive cold who needed to be at home in bed, but she powered through and was very nice (and sniffly).

So I’ve decided to be EXTRA nice to shop assistents this year. I hope I’m always friendly, but this week I went all out with smiles, “no worries, I’ll wrap it myself”s, “I don’t need a bag, thanks”s and “Merry Christmas!”s.

I’ve had student jobs in shops, but mainly cafés/food places and never in retail around Christmas. So I don’t know the struggle, but I still know that those friendly faces in the busy crowd means a lot!

Thrift your gifts

(OMG did I just make that rhyme for the first time ever? Probably not, But I love it)

Since I’m already telling you what to do in this post (don’t know why that’s my thing, apparently I get preachy around the holidays), here’s another thing:

Remember that secondhand or homemade things make great gifts! I talked about shopping a lot in this post, but in reality most of the places I’ve been Christmas shopping were thrift shops and the craft store. Trying to buy less new things has been a fun challenge to me.

Now I just have some (a lot) of DIY’ing to do. Actually writing this post in the middle of a giant, cute, creative mess of paper, fabric and other stuff 😀

After a very busy and exciting work week, I got home yesterday afternoon, slept from 5 to 7 p.m. on the couch, woke up and drew this:

Which, I guess, represents how I was feeling. You know, kind of mlem, but also moo.

I think it also means my brain is now on Christmas mode! I’m now questioning what a deer has to do with Christmas. Or did I draw a reindeer? Definitely not a moose, they’re snouts are more horse-like. Yes, I had this discussion with my BF 😀

Snow = Christmas brain

Yesterday morning, I walked to the bus early in the morning, and it was snowing (halp!) very windy and pitch black. Later in the day, the sun came out and it was the most beautiful, sunny and chilly November day. A crazy change!

I think starting the day with a bit of snow and a bent umbrella (haaalp!) definitely activated those Christmas sensors in my brain. I woke up today thinking about gingerbread cookies and candles and gift ideas.

I’m guessing more festive doodles are coming.
